Applicator certification, financial responsibility, and how to check
Pest control is one of the few home services with a licence you can genuinely verify. What Colorado requires - and the state's own lookup - are below.

Colorado licenses pest control applicators through Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA), Division of Plant Industry - which means a Nucla homeowner can verify a company against a public record before letting it into the house.
Colorado also sets a financial-responsibility bar for pest control firms: Liability insurance required - the Commercial Applicator must obtain and show proof of liability insurance in a minimum amount of $400,000. No surety bond requirement found. A Nucla buyer can ask any company to evidence it before work starts.
Nucla, Colorado has about 590 residents, and what pest control costs here is set by the pest, the property and the agreement rather than by geography - the published ranges are national; the licence rules and the local pest pressure are not.
Colorado sets its own exam, fee and insurance requirements for pest control operators, and the differences between states are large enough to affect what companies charge. The state's own rules and its public licence lookup are below.
Verifying a licence takes two minutes and is the single cheapest protection available to a Nucla buyer. The lookup link on this page goes to the state's own database, not to a directory we maintain.

| Notice before treatment | Colorado runs a Pesticide-Sensitive Registry (PSR). |
Colorado maintains a Pesticide-Sensitive Registry of medically documented individuals, and a pest control company must attempt to notify a registered resident at least 24 hours before a structural application at their multi-unit building - and, since 2020, must formally notify the landlord and tenant of any bed bug activity it finds.
This page is independent research, not legal or pest-management advice. Licensing rules, notification requirements and consumer protections vary by state and change - verify current requirements with your state's regulator, and follow product labels and professional advice for any treatment. Pesticide labels are federal law; this site does not recommend specific products or treatments.
What this means in Nucla
A termite bond that only obliges retreatment is not insurance. State agriculture regulators state plainly that this type does not obligate the company to repair, replace or correct damage the termites caused - so a Nucla homeowner holding one is still paying for the structural repairs themselves.

Common questions
Are pest control companies licensed?
Yes - and this is one of the few home services where that is genuinely true nationwide. Applicator certification is required under federal pesticide law and administered by each state, usually through the agriculture department, though some states use a dedicated board or the health department. Exam fees, insurance and bond requirements differ substantially by state. This site links to each state's own licence lookup.
Can I cancel a pest control contract?
If you signed at your door or anywhere other than the company's normal place of business, the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives you 3 business days to cancel in writing without giving a reason. Beyond that window it depends on your contract - many include a termination fee, which is exactly why the cancellation terms should be read before signing rather than after.
Is pest control safe around children and pets?
Product labels carry legally binding directions covering application, ventilation and re-entry, and a professional is required to follow them. Tell the company in advance about pregnancy, infants, pets, fish tanks or asthma, and ask which products will be used and for the labels. Where a lower-risk approach exists - baits and targeted application rather than broadcast spraying - it is reasonable to ask for it.
How do I check a company's record?
Most states publish both a licence lookup and a complaint or enforcement record. Check the licence is current and in the right category for your job, then look for enforcement actions. Both links are on this site's state page, pointing at the regulator's own database rather than a directory we maintain.
Why do bed bug quotes vary so much?
Because they are quoting different products. Chemical treatment runs 200-400 dollars per room and usually needs two to three visits weeks apart; whole-room heat treatment runs 400-900 per room but is typically one session with equipment on site. Whole-job totals commonly land at 1,000-2,500, with severe cases higher.
