Applicator certification, financial responsibility, and how to check
Pest control is one of the few home services with a licence you can genuinely verify. What Louisiana requires - and the state's own lookup - are below.

Louisiana licenses pest control applicators through Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) — Structural - which means a Kaplan homeowner can verify a company against a public record before letting it into the house.
Louisiana also sets a financial-responsibility bar for pest control firms: — before a place of business permit issues, the applicant must file a certificate of insurance covering public liability of not less than $250,000 per accident and not less than $100,000 property damage, plus a surety or fidelity bond of $2,000 (La. R.S. 3:3368). A Kaplan buyer can ask any company to evidence it before work starts.
Kaplan, Louisiana has about 4,164 residents, and what pest control costs here is set by the pest, the property and the agreement rather than by geography - the published ranges are national; the licence rules and the local pest pressure are not.
Louisiana sets its own exam, fee and insurance requirements for pest control operators, and the differences between states are large enough to affect what companies charge. The state's own rules and its public licence lookup are below.
Verifying a licence takes two minutes and is the single cheapest protection available to a Kaplan buyer. The lookup link on this page goes to the state's own database, not to a directory we maintain.

What this means in Kaplan
If you signed at your door, you have 3 business days to cancel under federal rule, in writing, without giving a reason. That protection exists because high-pressure doorstep selling is common in this trade - a state attorney general obtained a court order and a six-figure settlement against one national operator in 2026 over exactly that conduct.

Common questions
Can I cancel a pest control contract?
If you signed at your door or anywhere other than the company's normal place of business, the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives you 3 business days to cancel in writing without giving a reason. Beyond that window it depends on your contract - many include a termination fee, which is exactly why the cancellation terms should be read before signing rather than after.
What does a termite bond actually cover?
There are two types and the difference is enormous. A retreatment-only bond obliges the company to treat again if termites return but, in the words of state agriculture regulators, does not obligate it to repair, replace or correct any damage the termites caused. A retreatment-plus-damage bond additionally covers structural repairs up to a stated cap. Ask which one you are being offered, in writing.
Are pest control companies licensed?
Yes - and this is one of the few home services where that is genuinely true nationwide. Applicator certification is required under federal pesticide law and administered by each state, usually through the agriculture department, though some states use a dedicated board or the health department. Exam fees, insurance and bond requirements differ substantially by state. This site links to each state's own licence lookup.
How do I check a company's record?
Most states publish both a licence lookup and a complaint or enforcement record. Check the licence is current and in the right category for your job, then look for enforcement actions. Both links are on this site's state page, pointing at the regulator's own database rather than a directory we maintain.
Why do bed bug quotes vary so much?
Because they are quoting different products. Chemical treatment runs 200-400 dollars per room and usually needs two to three visits weeks apart; whole-room heat treatment runs 400-900 per room but is typically one session with equipment on site. Whole-job totals commonly land at 1,000-2,500, with severe cases higher.
